What is eduroam?

eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. It allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop.

eduroam is a global service spanning more than 100 countries, meaning that eligible users from participating countries have easy access to wireless and Internet access across the world. Responsibility for eduroam in each country is delegated to a national roaming operator, who coordinates the individual institutions within their region.

In Nigeria, the eduroam national roaming operator is the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN), and the service is operated as a joint effort with the Eko-Konnect Research and Education Initiative (Eko-Konnect)

How to join

The eduroam service is loosely divided into service providers (organisations that provide Internet access to users) and identity providers (organisations that do authentication for users).

The eligibility criteria for service- and identity providers are different, and you may be able to join the eduroam federation as either a service provider or an identity provider or both.

Any Nigerian organisation, including commercial entities, can become an eduroam service provider. However, only bona fide Nigerian tertiary education and research organisations may become identity providers within the federation.
